Hitch Your Wagon to a Lucky Star

I am just returned, although I think I left my heart in Texas, at least for a little while.  It needs to soak up all that love and deep learning that showed up at Lucky Star Art Camp. I still need time to process all that moved me and that will take quite a while, but the immediate loves are present.

A woman with a dream, Lisa Hamlyn Field.  A shining ***star*** in her own right.  A smile that never stops and a gift for weaving community.  A full time Mom, a full time job, a full time life, family love, gardening, creating, smiling, dancing, singing, planning, storytelling, never sleeping,  … a life overflowing with joy.  Her dream became our dream. Her enthusiasm we all shared, her sweet singing a gift we got to witness…Her vision became our vision too because she lived it each moment we were together.  Thank you Lisa for creating space for other dreams to awaken, for brave women to hitch their wagons, wherever they were going, to your Lucky Star.

The place, Camp Waldemar, thrown back into another time(off the grid, firmly planted in the here and now).  A magical river lined with cypress trees teeming with turtles and birds and big, old black girl lab reaching for her own star in the form of a 6 foot long stick from the river.  Limestone and bark, rustic and cozy, huge scaled building befitting the ever expanding blue of the Texas sky.  God’s country as they say.

Magical women.  Each with gifts to give which I feel like I received in abundance.  Each of us vulnerable and wanting to experience whatever spirit brought forth.  I felt truly blessed and grateful to each of my students for sharing themselves, being willing to dive in feet first not knowing how deep that river was and with no safety net.  Women who meditated with me and allowed themselves to really open to their creativity with their own voices.  Sometimes smiling, sometimes, crying, sometimes in awe of what they discovered about themselves and shared with each other. A classroom outside, plien air, by the river so the sound of water as it sluiced through the dam treated us all day long.

Embracing the critic…Frances opened some new doors and kicked that Stuckness to pasture.

IMG_9914Exploring color and play..Maeve made the most perfect painting with her children’s art she collaged in later to make a family tree…

IMG_9915Making, making, making..Gail got going and never stopped.

IMG_9943Layering and moving mood with color Melissa happily embraced the unexpected.

IMG_9941Playing with multiple materials…Leslie got some rocking stencil action going with a big fat black marker, loved it…

Aleli who came with just a simple lunch box of materials and made such beautiful journal pages.

Old friends and new friends

New friends Aleli, Kit, standing(getting over structure), Janet whose fabulous views on meditation really stirred me, Kelly with gorgeous gelli printed hand made journal.

Kaye(Lisa’s Mom) and long time friend Michele looking as beautiful as their spirits…Such stories and complete joy in their friendship…..

Diane, giver of stories and full of emotion and sweetness and so many more I haven’t got photos of.  Each of these women gave me gifts that I am still taking in and the pleasure that comes from teaching with intense presence and vulnerability of my own.

I am already spinning out wishes into the universe for next year, early November when I will return for the 2nd Lucky Star Art Camp, but the big picture and small moments remain to fill my days until then.
