Nathalie Kalbach Typewriter Stencil Bloghop – Mail Call

Hi gang!  Nathalie was nice enough to invite me to participate in her bloghop using her new typewriter stencil from StencilGirl Products.  I am honored to be playing along with some other wonderful artists too. NatKalbachStencilbloghop (1) Since those of you who know me know I occasionally do some mail art, I thought this stencil would be perfect for that venue. TypewriterStencilRecycling is another one of my passions, so I started this project with some recycled cereal boxes.  I cut and tore them down to slightly oversize cards to fit the whole stencil, glued on some pre-painted background papers.  Covered those with a light layer of gesso and painted through the stencil with acrylic paint.

I have a few friends with whom I swap papers and other items regularly,  so I then took the stencil and used it to embellish a large 9×13 mailer envelope.  I first stamped all over with my typewriter letter alphabet stamp, then sprayed through the typewriter stencil overlapping both the stencil and colors.  Knowing that part of the envelope would be covered up with labels, I took the stencil and painted a titanium white version in the lower left corner so it would be prominent when the piece was mailed.

IMG_8860Doesn’t the stencil look great just all by itself covered with paint….

IMG_8857I love how this looks with the envelope background showing through from behind….

My third and final project – yes, I  kept on going – was to embellish a black box to hold my mail art supplies, post card blanks, vintage stamps, and pens and stamps for making mail art. I pushed gel medium through the stencil and let it dry.  Punched out some random circles from scrapbook papers and glued them down.  Rubbed metallic paints over the stencil and went back in with titanium white paint and inky sprays over the whole box top for a shimmering effect.  Now I have something pretty to use for my supplies and I won’t have to guess which box they are in, the typewriter will identify it right away.
