Native Carvings and Gifts from a Friend

I worked on this mail art envelope
and the central image came from a
furniture catalog from Spain on an
article about young design talent.
It made me think so much about
Native American Art of the
Pacific Northwest. Their masks
carved with bold, graphic design
and even bolder color.

On a trip to visit Seattle a few
years back, we saw quite a bit
of Native American Art
at the Seattle Museum
of Art and were enthralled.

Their were totems and house
posts twelve and fifteen feet
high, all intricately carved
in this same style.

My homage in mail art form.

Another spectacular stamped mail art envelopes
(with her own carved stamps, of course!), arrived
today from Lyle.

We are planning to keep up this mail swapping,
which is so much fun.  Here is what came today…
An envelope with bird and pattern stamps. Some
glorious sheep on vintage paper, a hand, button and
tyvek material.  I will have lots of uses for this.
A new post to Lyle speeds on postal wings
on Monday…

that mask/puppet is brilliant ( well I can see it as one anyhow)………thats a project for my kids if ever I saw one …….what a fab parcel ….swapping stuff is like waiting for your birthday every day I am always excited to see the postman where pre swapping there just used to be bills ……much more exciting now ….have a great Sunday xx

  4. LOVE your new header, & all the mail art goodies.

All my kids got a Kachina doll for their 'special' shelf (which they've grown out of now 🙁 ) as I had one as a child, growing up as I did in Princeton NJ, not that far from the Smithsonian museum. I'm fond of the symbols, but don't know what they all mean, my favorites are the turtle & bear. I want to make a driftwood/found object 'totem pole' for the garden. One day.
